Task Manager will not load properly

I have a bit of an issue. I want to use Task Manager but
can't get it to load properly. I click Ctrl+Alt+Del to
bring up the window where I can select Shutdown and log
off and all the other options, including Task Manager.
What happens is that the window doesn't come up, Task
Manager automatically starts, minimised in the system
tray, and THEN if you move your mouse over the icon, it
disappears. I've tried to open it up also right clicking
on the Task Bar and selecting "Task Manager" from the
options, and also going to the windows direcotry and
actually clicking on the executable, but all bring the
same result. Does anyone have a solution, or can anyone
point me in the right direction. I've tried searching
the net for solutions, but it would seem nobody has had
this problem before. Any help will be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks Kelly, I'll have a look at what you suggest. I
doubt Virus because my virus program is up to date, and I
ran a full scan last night, and the only virus it found
was a trojan, and that wasn't causing the problem,
because it is still happening...ah well.

Most welcome. Note: A virus program can 'never' be up to date. What was
the name of the trojan and how do you know it was fully removed?

I am having a similar problem actually, but i do not know
if it is related. I am able to see the task bar and start
buttons, however when i launch a program, often (not
always but most of the time) the window will open,
covering the entire screen, task bar and all. To make
matters worse, windows will not allow me to resize any
window that is affected in this way. Windows will however
allow me to minimize the window back to the task bar. The
problem is that it is all or none.
-right now i am looking at a screen filled almost
completely by the beige "post a new message" window.
anyone heard of anything like this?
i have run house call and ad aware & spybot to no avail.

Hi,

Right click the Taskbar/Properties and check off: Keep the taskbar on top
of other windows.

unfortunately, thats not the problem kelly. i have 'keep
task br on top' checked. i have taken a number of screen
shots that detail some of what i am talking about.
in them you sill notice that often in the task bar it will
show a program as being active (button on bar is
depressed) when the program window is actually hidden.
description of the images:
1. open photoshop
2. right click on photoshop in task bar, 'restore'
3. immediately after clicking on 'restore'
4. right click microsoft news groups in task bar > cannot
restore, only options are max and min
5. left click microsoft newsgroups in task bar. same
result when double click.
6. result of maximize
7. full screen shot of post a new message window in
newsgroup. notice that the task bar has disappeared
8. after cascading windows (the only solution i have come
up with) notice that the newsgroup page now appears behind
the task bar.
9. screen showing keep task bar on top checked (i have not
changed this since i originally set up computer).

while i cannot post images here, if anyone thinks they can
take a stab at what is wrong, i'd be glad to email them.
each is 640x521 72 dpi .jpg
