Task Manager problem

I am having a problem when I try to do the following: Run the defrag
utility, press ControlAltDelete or the "run" utility when I've tried to
access 'regedit" or "msconfig". What happens is each of those screens
appear breifly, about one second, then disappear, leaving me unable to use
any of these items. I have not installed SP2 and this problem has only been
evident for about 10 days. Any suggestions?
Thank you,
Rich

Hi Rich,

This is caused by malware / Viruses. Run these malware cleaners:

1. Lavasoft Ad-Aware - http://www.lavasoftusa.com
2. SpyBot Search & Destroy - http://www.safer-networking.org
3. CWShredder -
http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html

Update 1 & 2 before running a scan.

Clean-up Windows Startup: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/startup.htm

*Then, run a full system virus scan with fully updated definitions.*

Ramesh,
I've run 2 different virus scans, Adaware, SpyBot, CWShredder, HiJack This
and I downloaded the Emergency Task Manager so I could access the regedit
and I can find no evidence of the Netstatt.exe virus or any of the others you
mentioned. I am still having the same problem and am at a loss as to what to
try next. Thanks for any help you can offer.
Rich

Rich,

It may not be netstatt.exe always, but any other virus can cause this. Post
the HijackThis log to a security forum for expert advice on malware cleanup.
