Task Manager Malfuntion

For some time now, when ever a bring up the task manager applet, it only stays visible for a few seconds and then closes. This does not allow me enough time to make a selection and even if I quickly make a sellection, it ignores the selection and closes anyway.
What gives?

I've read numerous posts in this group about a virus known to do this.
You'll see the same behavior if you try to launch regedit. So, it sounds to
me like you have to install some AV software and scan your machine.
