task manager disappears

When I press CNTRL-ALT-DEL the Windows Task Manager shows
up for less than a second, and then disappears.

I don't know when the problem started. I think it may
have been after I downloaded some updates from the Windows
Udates site.

It is unlikely that Windows Update caused your problem. This is
symptomatic of virus infection. Take the infected machine off the
Internet and any lans immediately. Scan with a current (post-2002
version using updated definitions) antivirus.
