When I do a control-alt-del the task manager comes up for about 3 seconds
and then disappears. I am using XPHome SP2 with all updates. I was wondering
if there is a fix for this and where can I get it. thx

Hi

Your task manager problem might be the work of a worm or something
similar (it could be from some spyware or parasite as well).

To try to solve your problem, do the following:

Copy and paste the URL address lines into your IE address bar:

http://www.dougknox.com

In the menu, select Win XP Utilities, Disable/Enable Task Manager.

To try to find what has caused this:

Run a cleanup tool, e.g. Stinger.exe from McAfee, it removes 30+
virus/worms in one sweep.

McAfee AVERT Stinger

and this one:

On Line Virus Scan
http://housecall.trendmicro.com

Be sure to run an updated Antivirus program at all times.

For the Spyware and Parasites part, you will need to run other tools:

This is symptomatic of virus infection. Scan with a full-featured
antivirus in Safe Mode, first making sure you have the most current
virus definitions. If you don't have an av installed on the hard drive,
then start by scanning with TrendMicro's Sysclean:

TrendMicro's Sysclean is an extensive antivirus tool which has the
advantage of not needing to be installed. It requires two parts - the
scanning engine and the virus pattern files.

1. Create a new folder on your Desktop or the C: drive named something
useful like "Sysclean".
2. Go here and download the two parts of the program to that folder:

http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp - Sysclean
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp - virus pattern files

The pattern files will be zipped - extract them with your unzipper (like
WinZip) or if you have XP, you can just open the folder. You need to
put the extracted files in the Sysclean folder you made.

3. Restart your computer in Safe Mode. Get into Safe Mode by repeatedly
tapping the F8 key as the computer is starting up to get to the proper
menu.
4. Go to the Sysclean folder you made and double-click on sysclean.com.
Start the scan. After the scan is finished, look at the log. You may
need to make a note of where any viruses were found if they were not
able to be removed so you can manually delete them.

After you've done the initial work with Sysclean, get and install a
full-featured av, update its definitions, and do a complete scan in
Safe Mode.
