Task Manager disabled by Administrator - Hp System Recovery

The long and the short is that we have to do a System Recovery (from Recovery
partition D) for our XP Presario. As
after it reboot a few times and goes to desktop, a message appears that 'the
task manager as been diabled by the Administrator.' Just wonder how could
that be as we did nothing.Any ideas, thanks

There is a very good chance that you are seeing the affects of a hijackware
infection.

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan!

2. WinXP ONLY!! => Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan
(only!) in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum, not here.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

It sounds like you didn't do a full destructive restore to factory
condition. Make sure you have backed up all your data to external media and
then:

1. Restart the computer and press the correct key to start the factory
restore process. It is usually F10 but you may need to refer to your
computer manual.

2. Make sure to choose the Advanced options for a full *destructive* factory
restore. This will return your computer to the state it was when you first
bought it. The recovery process may take as long as several hours. After
the recovery is complete, you will need to:

a. Uninstall obsolete/unwanted/trial programs.

b. Install a better antivirus than the trial Norton or McAfee that will come
with the machine. I recommend NOD32 (commercial) or Avast (free).

c. Apply all Windows Updates, including any Service Packs, that are needed
since the machine was new.

d. Update/install other useful programs such as Firefox, a .pdf reader,
Java, etc.

e. Restore your data from backups. DO NOT RESTORE THE DATA WITHOUT SCANNING
IT FOR VIRUSES FIRST.

Doing all of the above takes a certain level of computer skills. Only you
know your own abilities. It might be better to take the machine to a
competent local computer tech. If you go this route, I don't recommend
using a BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place.

Will follow through your suggestions. Fyi, follow method #2 fromhttp://windowsxp.mvps.org/Taskmanager_error.htmand now when it hit
alt/ctlr/del - nothing appears which I thought the Task Mgr was suppose to
appear.
Thanks for your response.

Is that "Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator" error
message your only problem at the moment?

If that is your only problem, let's fix that instead of some of the
more time consuming alternatives.

The infection(s) has disabled Task Manager (and, probably, Regedit,
Automatic Updates, your firewall, and your anti-virus application). You've
got to resolve/remove the infection(s) in order to make all of them
functional again.
