Hello,

I have a user receiving an error "tapi.exe has encountered an error and
needs to close" on startup.
I don't believe that this is spyware because it only appears right after
start-up and the machine doesn't seem to affected at any other time. However,
I am having the user run Symantec AV just to be sure.

Has anyone ever seen this error or know what program tapi.exe is from? I am
thinking that it may be part of one of their programs that begin on startup,
but I don't want to have the user re-install all those programs.

TAPI is a part of Windows that is usued in setting up standard analog
dial-up modem. You may have to remove and re-installed the drivers
for this modem.

Did you use the tool from Sysinternal for your Modem or the number of lines
you can monitor?
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sbs/45/reskit/part10/sbrk1052.mspx?mfr=true

I also read that this can be a Virus BackDarter A (which Old one may be
recreated?).
You can investigate the original source of this app by searching for:
TAPI.EXE opn the system which may be located here:
C:\Windows\System32\TAPI.exe
You can take it off from the startup list by going to the Run command and
type in:
msconfig >> click [OK] then click on Startup Tab on the sys config window.
Or type in the run command text input:
regedit >>click [OK] and locate this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run = Locate in
the right pane/window and remove it.
HTH.

Hello,

Thank you for your post as well as to Nass for the information sharing.

I think what Nass said was right on the target. We should first narrow down
the issue and investigate the original source of this issue.

Please search "tapi.exe" under %SYSTEMDRIVE% on your computer first.

And then please use System Configuration utility in Windows XP to narrow
down which startup program causes the issue.

To do this, please follow the below steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.

2. On the Startup tab, uncheck all startup programs and click OK.

3. Restart your computer.

If the issue does not occur, please use Selective startup method try to
find which startup program causes the issue by turning startup programs on
or off.

To do this, please follow the below steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.

2. On the Startup tab, check one of the available startup item and
uncheck all the other items and click OK.

3. Restart your computer.

4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 until the issue occur, and then please let me
know which startup program cause the issue.

If the issue still occurs when all startup programs are unchecked, please
try to perform a clean boot and check whether the issue still occurs.

To perform a clean boot, please follow the below steps:

1. Click Start->Run...->type msconfig and press Enter

2. Click Services tab and select Hide All Microsoft Services and Disable
All third party Services.

3. Click Startup tab and Disable All startup items

4. Click OK and choose Restart

5. After reboot, check whether the issue still occurs

Please also run a full Virus scanning on your computer.

Please let me know the result when you finish the tests. Thanks.

Neo Zhu,
