Takes forever to do simple things

I have done a fresh install of windows xp on my system and
now for some reason it takes forever to copy or move
things from one folder to another.
I dont understand what is sapping the performance from my
computer.
I have all the newest drivers, windows updates, bios
ect.... and my puter runs sometimes slower then my 475mhz
amd.

a suggestion that i would make to microsoft would be that
they make it so the updates not just update the system but
will check for problems i.e. damaged files, deleted files,
ect....
the main reason i had to do a fresh install is because
Internet Explorer got crupted and when i tried to
reinstall i could not because it said i had and there was
no place to dl the full IE.

I am bout ready to go back to 98se or get rid of windows
all together. I just want a OS I don't need all of the
other stuff that microsoft has included with windows(any
version).
i have diskdefragers, i have media players, i have picture
viewers i dont need the microsoft lite versons i would not
besuprized if the next verson does no come on a dvd rom
drive.

Since you give no details about your system, it is impossible to give
you a specific answer. However, perhaps your system is too slow; maybe
you don't have enough RAM (at least 256MB); perhaps you have an old,
slow, small hard drive. If your hardware is adequate for XP, then
perhaps you have too many programs/services running in the background,
or you have a virus, or spyware.

Here are generic troubleshooting steps for the software end: 1) scan
with current antivirus ("current" means a version not later than 2002
but using updated virus definitions); 2) remove spyware with Spybot
Search & Destroy (www.security.kolla.de) and Ad-aware
(www.lavasoftusa.com) - note that it is a good idea to do virus/spyware
scans in Safe Mode; 3) delete temporary and Temporary Internet Files;
4) stop unnecessary services/programs from starting with Windows - see
www.blackviper.com for services info and www.pacs-portal.co.uk
startup_index.htm for programs info.

One thing to check - Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager
and look in IDE ATA/ATAPI disk controllers for the Primary channel (and
the secondary). Double click, on the Advanced page make sure that each
device is set to DMA if available, and that the hard disk (top on
Primary) is in a DMA mode, not PIO. If it gets in PIO such things slow.
This happens if there have been too many errors in the hardware, so
check that cables are correct and then in Device manager highlight the
Main controller (one above Primary channel) and Action - Uninstall.
Then close down, correct the hardware trouble and restart to let PnP try
again
