tabs in task bar

im having problems with my task bar, normaly when you would open a program or
file or any window , then it would also show as a small box in your task bar,
so when you got more than 1 open then you can navigate between each one by
clicking on it in the task bar, but for some reason anything i open does not
go into my task bar therefore i have to keep clicking on the X in red box in
right corner of each window to get to the other, if this makes sense please
help.
