Tables mysteriously right-justified

In one part of a Word 2000 document, any new tables that are inserted
appear about 1" narrower than the page width and right justified.

I've checked the paragrapgh settings and it is set to left justified.

If I select the table and then click on the left-justify icon, the
table expands to fit the page width and is left justified.

This only happens in one part of the 3-page document. Everywhere else
it acts normally.

Can anyone tell me what's going on?

Click in this area of the document (maybe even in such a table, to be
sure you're in an affected area) then go to tools/Language/Set
language. What language is active here?

You might also check which style is applied in this spot and check the
style definition (or even remove it).

English (U.S.)

Normal Style. I should have mentioned that. I have checked everything
I can think of. Everything about that region of the document, where
tables behave differently, is the same as the rest of the document,
where they behave normally.

Hmmm. I'd have expected this was formatted with a right-to-left
language...

With the cursor in such a table: Table/Table Properties. Is the alignment
set to left or to right? And is it formatted with text flow?
