Table of Contents

Hi,

We mark our documents for table of contents generating. We don't use styles
at this time (but will eventually).

We notice that when you mark a heading that is enclosed in quotation marks,
it messes up that entry in the TOC. That is, the text does not appear in the
TOC. If, however, you go into the field code and delete the quotation marks
around the heading (leaving the quotation marks that are part of the field
code), the TOC entry generates fine. We then go into the TOC and manually
type in the quotation marks in that particular heading.

Is there a way around this? Is there a way to include quotation marks
around a heading that's marked for table of contents?

Thanks,

Because a TC field uses quotation marks to indicate the text to be included
in the TOC, you have to "escape" any actual quotation marks by preceding
them with a backslash. In the isolated cases where even this doesn't work,
you can use two single quotes in place of a double one. It doesn't look
quite the same, but most readers won't notice.
