Table of Contents based on Navigation?

M

Mr B

FP 2k2

When I go to add a ToC page it only lets me do it by secifying a page to start from or some category
type thing. When I want is a Table of Contents Based off the Navigation Structure I have set up.
Basically want to use it as a "Site Map".

I'd want all the items with child pages to Not be Links but to be headers.

Sample of what I want is at http://www.gmar.ws/sitemap2.htm Except I don't want the items that have
child pages to be links at all...

Or do I have to do this by hand?

Set up the TOC using categories. See FP Help for details.

Armond's suggestion is great. if you want to have a little more flexibility
just let FrontPage make your table of contents and view it in a browser view
the source or file/ save as and then you can edit it while FrontPage has
done all the hard work of figuring out and making all the links. once it's
viewed in a browser and saved you can delete the toc from the page in
FrontPage and edit and use your saved version.

I tried doing that but it doesn't break them out and put all the files in each category by each
other. If I select All the Category boxes, it just puts them all in one big list. Do I have to add
10 TOCs to the page if I have 10 Categories? That doesn't seem to make sense.

I've found a little goofyness with the TOC though. The one I have is indexing image pages generated from thumbnailed pix..can't figure out why...and it's not pressing so I haven't posted it here.

I noticed the same thing too. that's when I found the tip somewhere around
here that I gave Mr. B. it really is a lot better to just copy and edit the
code it generates unless you keep the toc in mind as you're putting the
structure of the site together. I did a site for a real-estate company and
was able to use the toc for the sitemap without a hitch but I had it in the
back of my mind from the start. ;-)

If you do it by categories, is it supposed to sort them within the categories? THe one I did to
test it just sorted them all together.

Maybe I did it wrong. Hmm.

I think the downside is you've got to assign categories to each page.
there's one similar function that you won't have if you don't have
sharepoint services. I believe it's document library.

What I did is took 7 random files ad assigned them to one of 2 categories. I assumed that it would
first list all the items from the first category (sorted by Title) and then the items from the
second category (sorted by Title). This isn't what happened. It just put all 7 pages sorted by
Title without any regard for what category they were in.

Within your site map or toc page, you must use a _separate_ toc component
for each category, and then set each component to show only the desired
category. You can for example build a table headed by a category title, and
then insert the toc component in the next row with proper spacing, etc.
There is a very good Help on this in FP 2003 (and possibly other versions,
although I don't quite remember).

Yes. See accompanying post.

That's what I was afraid of. That's the most retarded thing I've ever heard. Oh well.

Just as easy to just make a ordered list and do it myself...

Being able to use multiple TOC component give you more flexibility, then if
the component worked in the manner you would like it to.

With separate components, you could have the first group sorted by title,
the second group sort by Date. You could even place them in different table
or table cell with different background colors, etc. Whereas with the way
you would like it to work, you would only be able to specify one type of
sort for all groups and no way to split it up on the page.

Yeah but for peolpe who want the whole thing sorted by title, Myway is a hell of a lot faster....
:)

C

it's unbelievably fast to let FrontPage do a toc on the whole damn site,
then view the page in the browser and view source copy and past the toc from
there into or over the toc in FrontPage.
now just switch to design view and delete the stuff you don't want. there's
no way you could type that fast let alone make your links.
