Tabbing does not change outline number

Hi,

I use word 2003 for taking notes in class and I've depended heavily on the
outlining, numbering, and bulletting features. When I tab in now, however,
this is what happens:

I. Filler Text
II. new text
III. new text

when it should be doing this:

I. Filler Text
a. new text
i. new text

I reset normal.dot, thinking that was the problem, but then I opened some
old outlines that used to be correct and when I tab in those documents now,
the same problems occurs.

Is there a way to just reset all the formatting in word to their defaults?
I've tried going into the bullets & numbering menu as well as changing the
heading styles as I've seen on a number of troubleshooting sites but nothing
works.

Also, where SHIFT+TAB used to move the tab one back, it instead keeps going
forward.

I really need to get this problem fixed before mid terms in two weeks
because I need to be able to outline for study purposes as well as
notetaking. It has gotten to the point where I'm thinking of backing up my
files and reformatting my computer just to fix this.

Please help!
