I'm having problems with my computer. When I hit the tab, R, P, or 4 keys my
computer goes wacko. Its like someone is holding down the tab key. I can hit
shift to stop the problem temporarily. My keyboard is clean, so that's not
the issue. This is the third time I've had to type this because of that
problem. Thanks for your help.

I would try a different keyboard.

It's a good idea to mention such essential facts straight away!

Download "remapkey" from the Microsoft site, then use it
to move the "Tab" function to one of your Alt keys (the one
you use less often). If the problem persists then it's a Windows
problem. If it disappears then it's a keyboard problem. When
finished with your tests then you can move the key back to
where it belongs.

you should plug in a
regular usb keyboard
and see if the problem
still occurs with an
alternate input method.

further, you can also run
osk and see if the mouse method
of inputting those keys
dissipate or lingers.

the above methods will
help determine if the
issue is hardware or
software related.

What exactly do you mean when you write "Remapkey did
not work"?
- Did Remapkey fail to remap the tab key? or:
- Did your original problem persist after you remapped the Tab key?

System restore did not correct the problem. It is in fact worse now. I'm
having to type this message as a txt document while holding the shift key.
I'm at my mind's end on this problem.

Look at the laptop for any extra led indicators that are on; I'm
thinking some Fn key/key combination might turn off whatever mode you've
engaged.

I checked the LEDs and nothing is out of place. The only things engaged:
touch pad and numlock.

Since you're not getting anywhere, you have to prove once and
for all that your keyboard is intact. Follow db's suggestion and
see if the problem persists with a borrowed USB keyboard

Ah, here's an interesting thread.. might be related, or suggest a cause:

"My spacebar doesn't work on its own. I have to press shift + spacebar
in order for it to work. Any suggestions?"

"Are you running CYGWIN? I've seen it prevent certain keys from working
unless shifted."

"Thanks for the help guys I figured it out. I had an alpha version of a
particular program. I reverted back to the standard version. Instead of
uninstalling the Alpha Version, I installed the standard version over
top of it. After fooling around I noticed that the spacebar would stop
working only when the particular program was running.

Result: I had to uninstall the standard version, reinstall the alpha
version, then uninstall the alpha version and I removed all of the
Application Data as well. then reinstalled the standard version."

I haven't been able to get a hold of a USB keyboard, yet. But I did check
the task manager and with nothing running the CPU usage hover around 21-25%
usage. The System Idle Process is taking up most of that. I don't know if
that is of any issue. That's all I could find that seemed out of the
ordinary.

This is of concern. The System Idle process should consume more
than 90% of the CPU activity while the system is idle. Which
process is it that consumes almost 80% of the CPU resources?
Click the CPU column header once or twice to force this process
to float to the top of the list.
