Systray icons won't do what I say

I'm running on a wireless network, so I don't need to know that my net cable
is unplugged. Neither do I want the windows wireless icon, because it don't
work rite half the time anyway. I do want my Broadcom icon, because it tells
me the truth, and I also want to ALWAYS see my battery icon, even when the
power is plugged in, so I can see when it's charged up.
So, I right click on the taskbar, go to properties, customize, and pick
Always Hide, or Always show, as the case may be, Apply, OK.
Next time I boot up, it goes back like it was!!!!

For the Network icons either:
Right click the icon in the Notification Area (Systray) and click "Open network
connections" in the popup menu.
or
On the desktop Right click My Network Places and click Properties in the popup menu.

Right click a network that's listed and click Properties in the popup menu.
Uncheck "Show icon in......" and/or "Notify me when.....".
Click Ok and select another listed network/device.
When finished with the ones you desire to disable the options ok all the way out.

For the battery:
Right click the desktop.
In the popup menu click Properties > ScreenSaver tab > Power button.
After configuring all of your desired settings Apply > Ok out.

applications may be disallowing the change(s) from "sticking". These include
but are not limited to Ad-aware's Ad-Watch, Spybot Tea Timer,
SpywareBlaster, SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor, Norton AntiVirus, McAfee
VirusScan and/or Antispyware, and Zone Alarm (Free and Pro).

I have McAfee ViruScan. Guess I need to check it's configuration or maybe
have a word with them.
