\systemroot\system32\config\software - log or alternate is corrupt

This is the message I am receiving when booting my laptop. I have two
problems: 1: When I hit my 'access ibm' button for recovery, I am asked for a
password that has unfornately been forgotten. Anyway around this?

2: I have found information to repair this problem but all my computer does
is reboot. I cannot find a way to get to a C: prompt. Again, anyway around
this?

I have a R50E laptop if that helps any running XP Professional.

Either look in the manual that came with the laptop, if any, or consult
IBM's tech support.

Boot from the WinXP installation CD.

I have a R50E laptop if that helps any running XP Professional.
