I am using Windeows XP, and am continuing to get a number of error
messages that say to the effect that:

"system32\hal.ll is missing' please reinstall a capy of the file."

The only way I know of fixing the problem is to reinstall Windows, which
takes me a good half an hour. The only time I get this message is when I
reboot. I am then unable to restart.

What's going on? Surely there is a quicker method of repairing the
problem.

How ironic! My computer is doing the same thing today. But after it sits on
the logo screen for about 4 hours it boots up and works fine until you have
to reboot. Everything I read, you need windows xp cd, the only thing I have
is this emachines restore dvd. But since the computer comes up (in about 4
hours) can I download from somewhere and copy the hal.dll file? I checked
the version and compared it to the one on the emachine dvd and they do not
match, I think the hal.dll file I have now came from or was updated wtih xp
sp2, I do not know. I have tried the system restore, I am on my second try
with that, I went back about a week. I cheched the boot.ini, that did have
errors, but now that is fixed. Any other suggestions other than the what is
in the articles?

You do not get the message on a cold startup, but do get it on a
reboot? Is that correct?

If so then it is most likely some sort of temperature related hardware
problem, but which component and exactly what the problem is could be
difficult to pinpoint.

I would start with overheating as the prime suspect. Open the
computer case and check for any buildup of dust or fuzz, especially
around the CPU cooling fan and heat sink, and remove it with
compressed air. You can purchase cans of compressed air for this
purpose at most electronic or computer supply stores.

Check out the operating of the CPU cooling fan and make sure it is
spinning freely with no noise or vibration. Also the fan on the video
card if there is one. Replace the fan(s) if the computer is more
than 3 years old. They are not expensive.

Also consider installing an additional fan inside the computer case to
improve overall air flow. In most computer cases the best location is
to mount the fan in the front of the case so it is drawing outside air
into the case. However on many cases this is not possible because of
disk drive bays and/or the front panel USB and audio connectors. A
fan at the back of the case, configured to blow air out of the case,
can be almost as effective if the front mount is not workable.

Good luck
