system32.exe

Upon boot-up of my computer, I get a message "cannot
find /Windows/System32/System32.exe file..." I exit out
of the window and my system seems to work just fine. I
think this file was quarantined and deleted. Does anyone
know whether this was a necessary file? If not, does
anyone know how I would get rid of this message? Thanks
in advance for any help you can provide.

Lisa you will need to remove the reference for this virus:-

You can go to this site
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_clean_kwbot.htm
and do a clean up using Doug Knox's script or you can clean it yourself from
the following:-

When run, it copies itself to the WINDOWS directory as SYSTEM32.EXE and
creates WIN.INI and registry entries to load itself at system startup:
[windows]
load="C:\Winnt\SYSTEM32.exe
open="C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32.exe"

[winnt]
load="C:\Winnt\SYSTEM32.exe
open="C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32.exe"

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Run\SYSTEM32=C:\Windows\SYSTEM32.exe
