Ok, so today I was doing some maintenance on my XP SP2 system. I wen
to Microsoft.com, downloaded some needed updates as well as runnin
Registry Mechanic. I've never had a problem with Reg. Mechanic so
hope this is not the problem but after the Microsoft updates it aske
for a reboot...which i did. It would go through the reboot, get to th
boot screen and after that it would go blank. I tried booting in Saf
Mode, Last Known Config, etc....same results. Luckily I have m
buddies laptop here so I could do some research as well as calling m
father for some advice. We decided to insert the XP disc and boot fro
the CD Rom drive which it did with success. I then hit R for repair an
it brought me to a black screen with the C prompt. I typed in chkdisk/
and it did it's thing for a few minutes then returned to the C promp
where I typed exit to reboot. After rebooting, I selected Normal an
after the Boot screen we made it one step further to a blue scree
where it was puking out all kinds of lines of text eventually stoppin
with 3 dots at the bottom...clearly progress indicators. Now, it'
been on this screen for about 15 minutes now still with thre
dots..leading me to believe it's doing nothing. The hard drive ligh
on the front of my case isn't blinking and my drives sound silent...n
life. Do I let it sit or do I reinstall XP?

On a side note when I try to start it in Safe Mode the last line I ge
is the driver Mup.sys. Not sure if this helps...I sure hope so.
Thanks!

Run a repair install of Windows XP. Odd though, as I have Registry Mechanic
and never had an issue with it. Did you upgrade to version 5?

chkdsk / p only reads the drive. it doesn't do any repairs.
run chkdsk /r from command prompt in recovery console.
Although I'm by any means am an expert!!
all research from posts int this newsgroup points to hardware issues.
ram, hdd, mb, cpu

search for some previous posts on mup.sys

I'd like to know the error displayed on the Blue Screen of Death.

Well, it is version 5 but I have this feeling that it's related to the
updates I installed from Microsoft. I did edit the registry but it was
something minor...my cpu was at 100% because of explorer.exe...there is
a tweak to fix this regarding .avi files but I highly doubt this is a
result of that tweak. Maybe I'm wrong but I'm more inclined to blame
the Microsoft updates. Check out this link too:

Very close to the problems I'm having. My problem with installing XP
again is that I know I have SP2 on my machine but I'm not sure if the
XP disc I have has SP2 on it...could this screw me up? If it's a
matter of installing XP ontop of itself then fine but what will I lose?
I have a CRAP load of files and apps that I can't lose but those are on
other partitions...for the most part the C drive only has system files
on it...anything I install goes there. That's it.

First off...thanks for all the replies!

The Blue Screen isn't of the Death variety. It just shows a bunch of
lines of text and tells me that it's done running but then
hangs...forever. After going through a million threads all over the
net I've downloaded and burned a bootable CD with Memtest - 86 on it
and it's running right now...1.5 hours now. I'm trying to decipher it
but it's still churning away.

When perofrming a repair install, Windows setup ONLY overwrites the Windows
files on the hard drive. It doesn't affect the programs and files you added,
except you may need to reinstall the programs to get the registry keys
reloaded. Your misc. files will be there still. Oh, and you'll need to
reinstall and Windows updates you performed on the OS.

That's good to know...let me ask you this...what if I install XP withou
any service packs on top of XP SP2? The system disk I have doesn't hav
any service packs...will that screw it up? Also, just a hunch...now I'
wondering if my C drive is shot. I have multiple drives..how can I tel
in the bios that it sees all of them

It shouldn't matter, because Windows is effectively uninstalled and
reinstalled without affecting user created files or other installed
programs. The downside is, as I mentioned before, you'll have to reload
those programs as the registry will be non-existent. Now, if you are still
concerned, and have a CD burner, a decent burning software, and a blank CD,
and the SP2 downloadable file or SP2 CD, you can slipstream SP2 and Windows
XP together. The following is a link to the instructions on how to
slipstream.

http://www.theeldergeek.com/slipstreamed_xpsp2_cd.htm

Also, if your computer wasn't able to see your C: drive, you would get the
error: "Operating System Not Found," despite there being an OS on your
computer. That said, follow the prompt to enter setup when the BIOS is
testing itself. You will see the hard drives themselves, not drive letters.
You need to look to see if the Primary Master drive is being recognized.
That is your C: drive.
