Boot freeze

I'm using a Dell Dimension 3100.

Since last night, everytime I boot up or reboot, the pc freezes at the
BIOS screen and only after pressing F2 or F12 will it continue to the
Windows logo screen and everything's ok after that.

It all started with an "Auto Adjust In Progress" message displayed
during bootup (freezes until I press F2), Windows logo screen and
Welcome screens but after running auto adjust on the 19" LCD, that
message disappeared.

But it bugs me to have to press a key to continue after each
Boot/Reboot.

Is it a problem with some corrupted files? I've run CHKDSK and all 5
steps are ok. Ran defragment too.

If it's not some corrupted files or something, and if it's also
possible, how do I get to not have to press a key to continue booting?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Your auto-adjust problem is probably separate from the requirement to press
F2/F12.

The "auto adjust" message is from your Dell monitor. It appears under
specific conditions. Following reference is for one particular Dell monitor
but same text shows up in documents for many different Dell monitors:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/monitors/2405fpw/English/setup.htm

The stop on the BIOS screen to press F2 or F12 to enter setup/continue is
commonly seen when some setting in BIOS is not right or when there's a bit
of hardware acting up.

I'm tempted to say that there may be a problem with the display card since
the auto-adjust kicks in when the signal from the card cannot be detected
or if the signals are different than what the monitor is currently set up
for. However, reading a few threads that I tracked down with a google
search, users in similar situations were able to fix the this by getting an
updated .inf file for the monitor. Example reference:
http://www.webuser.co.uk/forums/showflat.php?Number=230099

You could try an updated INF file for your monitor. Possibly reinstalling
display drivers (or update if an update is available) would help too.

However, if the stop on the BIOS screen continues and you are not able to
determine why, I suggest contacting Dell for further assistance. If there
is defective hardware causing the second part of this problem, you will
need a formal incident logged with technical support to get the hardware
replaced.

I was afraid of this actually ... about defective hardware. I did the
monitor autoadjust button trick AND downloaded the latest driver and
that's how the auto adjust in progress message stopped. But it still
freezes up on bootup.

Ah well, Dell support, here I come :(

Thanks very much, Sharon F :).

You're welcome and best of luck in getting this resolved.
