Windows XP Home., Presario Laptop.
Sometimes when I boot up the "Notification Area" system tray contains all
the expeted icons; volume control, power status, network status, etc etc.
However, at other times many of the icons are missing.
e.g. Now I do not have any volume control or charging icons.
I have NOT enabled the "Hide inactive icons" check box, but if I do things
are still erratic.
Can anyone help?

I've got the same problem with XP Pro and have never been able to find an
answer! My big problem is the battery icon which is a real pain.
One work-around I have found is to log off the current user and re-log on
and the icons all seem to magically appear. It's a real hassle & I'd like
to find the real fix!
