My task bar is insisting on showing the time as white text on a light
gray background. It is very hard to read. My theme is called "Wood".
However, the taskbar has more of a metal look.

Any suggestions?

Since there is no "Wood" theme natively in XP, you must be using a
third-party theming application. Either go back to XP's native themes
(which are sadly limited) or try a different theme from the third-party
application.

Control Panel -> Display -> Appearance Tab
It sounds like your "Color Scheme" is set to "Silver"
Try changing it to "Default (Blue)".

There is a program (which I don't remember where I got it) that
convinces Windows to accept unsigned themes. That dramatically expands
the choices.

Wrong skin. Besides, I hated blue. It made me feel like my $3000
machine was a cheap kiddie laptop from a company like VTech.

It doesn't matter. The fact is that you are using some form of
third-party theming and the theme you've applied isn't working well
and/or playing nicely with XP. Use another one. You may need to unload
the third-party theme first and revert to XP's native theme before going
back to the third-party theme again.

Then do you know of a 3rd party bar that that can display the time?

I should mention that I was thinking of a rebar that is free. If not, I
may use a Google gadget.
