system sounds

System sounds no longer function during startup and shutdown. In addition,
sounds from some websites no longer function. However, I have no problems
playing video and audio files and the same from some websites.

All was fine before I updated video codecs for divx files. At this same
time, the audio for my Skype connection stopped functioning.

Any thoughts on my problems ?

Open Control Panel > Sounds and Devices > Volume (tab), > make sure that
Mute is not checked under (Device Volume).
