System slows when accessing 'My Computer'

When I click on 'My Computer', it seems to take over 2
minutes until control returns and I get to see the
files. This happens in applications when I attempt to do
a <File><Save As> and click the down arrow in order to
select other directories. Once control returns, I can
then traverse the directory structure without a problem.
I can even close that dialog box and when I re-open it,
it's extremely fast (BTW - I'm running a 2.0 GHz Celeron,
256MB Ram, 160GB hard drive, on a VIA motherboard P4PB
400-FL. Video card is a Mad Dog Conqueror FX5200 Plus
GeForce FX AGP 8X). I've installed Win Xp Pro, Zone
Alarm (firewall) and Norton Anti-Virus 2004. That's it!
Nothing else on this machine! Oh, and I loaded all of
the WinXP patches off the Windows Update website...
Any help would be appreciated!

I don't have the long slowdown you're experiencing, but also have noticed a
peculiarity when clicking the My Computer down arrow in a <File><Save As>
dialog box. In my case, there is a delay of up to about 2-3 seconds, rather
than the 2 minute delay you're getting. Then the menu expands downwards.
Unfortunately the expanded menu loses the position of the original folder.
However I can then click on the left arrow to goto the last folder visited,
then the menu will expand properly with the position of the current folder.
I have no idea why such strange behaviour. I consider it a bug, but perhaps
that's the way it's "supposed" to work in XP(?). I certainly wouldn't have
designed it to work that way!

In your situation, I would start "disabling" things, to see if I could
isolate the culprit. For example disable your firewall and anti-virus. If
that's not it, try unchecking all of the boxes in msconfig, startup. Of
course routine maintenance such as emptying your recycle bin, deleting
temporary internet files, and defrag are always a good idea. I note that
TweakUI has a speedup for menus, but doubt that it would do enough to fix
your extreme slowdown.
