system shutdown problem

dear sir,
my computer from a couple of days is not shutting down.
Whenever i try to close the computer by using the gui
method, nothing happens and i have to close the system by
switching the power off.

Please guide me what to do?

It does happen to many people. Keep using the GUI method, and wait several
minutes....maybe 3-4.
