System Restore

I cannot restore my computer to any other time than the current day. Each
time I try I get an error message saying that system restore did not work due
to an unspecified error. How can you fix it if you don't know what it is ?
Also numerous other people have told me they are having probems with windows
restore in Vista. I have the windows Vista Ultimate Version on my computer.
Anybody familiar with this or have any suggestions
