System restore.

When I look at system restore points, it only lists two restore points and
they were both yesterday. I've had Vista for several weeks. Why is it not
keeping all restore points it has made. I know for a fact it has made many
restore points as I've seen it make them when I install something new. I got
umpteen billion bits of space available on my HD so it's not space that is
limiting factor.. What gives?

Thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom,

Did you enable the option to show restore points older than 5 days?

Thanks for the reply. How do I enable it to show restore points older than 5
days?

Thanks,

I searched online. No, that option is not avaialbel. There is no box to
check that will allow that on my released version of Vista Ultimate. I
assume you were referring to this:
http://www.windowsvistauserguide.com/system_restore.htm

Maybe that option appears if I do have older restore points on the drive. I
guess the question is now, why is it not keeping old restore points? Is
there a setting that I can change to allow more file space for restore
points?

Thanks,

Tom

Do you happen to dual boot XP?

Another thought, restore points can only take up a certain percentage of
drive space, if you did something recently which caused a huge restore
point to be created, it may have expired off the older restore points.

No dual boot. Just Vista. What is the drive space percentage that is
required? Is that settable to use more space? Like XP, I'd like to be able
to keep at least a months worth of restore points. I don't know how many
times that's saved my ass with XP. If it's not going to work the same in
Vista, as far as I'm concerned, it's a downgrade.

Thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom,

Open System Restore, click the option to select a date to restore to (not
the one that just uses the most recent one). In the next dialog it will show
one or two points, and the option to show older ones should be on the bottom
left.

Be aware as well that some updates will remove older restore points to
prevent compatibility problems.

Also, Tom, unlike XP there is no easy way to adjust the amount of space used
by System Restore (which is roughly 12% of the drive).

Hi Rick,

Mine doesn't show the option box to check for restore points older than 5
days like this depicts:
http://www.windowsvistauserguide.com/vista2/system_restore/restore_point.JPG
Mines just shows two restore points and no option box like that. Maybe if
there is no older restore points, it doesn't show that option? In any case,
I do have lots of HD space but I realized it's mostly on a different
partition. Drive C had 15 gig of 78 gig remaining (19%) and drive D has 75
gig remaining. So maybe since drive C only had 19%, that might be the
reason but I'm still not sure of this. I erased the old backup of XP I had
on there and that freed up an additional 20 gig so now I have 35 gig
remaining of 78 gig (45%). Now, hopefully, more restore points are kept. I'm
keeping my fingers crossed.

Tom
