System Restore

System: XP

I tried to restore my system by clicking the system
restore feature but it doesn't work. I check my computer
properties to see if the system restoration feature was
enable, and it was. Can someone help me with this problem
because every time I tried to do this the computer tells
me to restart the system and tried again.

Restore is not reliable. It's a marketing gimmick for MS.
You can turn it off from Control Panel > System > and then
re-boot and it will purge it's file. Then re-boot, turn it
back on.
You still have to deal the problem, it's a crap program,
that half works, half the time.

Do a real backup and get Erunt for your registry. It puts
a folder on your root dir with a installer.

System Restore and Go-Back (similar) are O.K., but they
are not a replacement for a full system Image. For the users
that are thoughtful enough to want their Data/OS install
protected, they should be taught to use Ghost, Drive Image
BootItNG and other tools that have a higher reliability and
offer greater protection. I've never had someone I encouraged
to use "Imaging" ever come back and say it was a waste of
time or money. But, I have a list of people who never went
ahead and imaged their machine and got the "Frantic" phone
call about getting their Address Book, years of mail and My
Documents off a crashed disk drive. I believe it is a matter
of being informed. Look at the sales of Anti-Virus and
firewall software over the past two months.

I have used goback for years(the delux version) and never
regreted having it. However, it had also failed (crashed)
at critical moments and I needed to restore from a saved
image. I use acronis true image 6 which is easy to use and
has been very reliable. You can check that out as well as
ghost and drive image.

System Restore is not a cure for all problems, and is certainly
not a substitute for a backup. But it is far more than "a
marketing Gimmick for MS." It is a very useful feature, one that
has gotten me and many others out of trouble many times.

It is capable of abuse, and has limited purposes. But it is far too
useful to regard it as just a marketing gimmick, and you are becoming a
nuisance.

As a case of illustration, this past week I have been playing with some
new hardware in varying configurations and settings. I have made 5
restore points in the period to have the state at a given level of
experiment preserved, so I could return to it exactly - and have done so
three times.

It is for a different purpose - it is much nearer a backup system, to
put everything, data and all, back to an earlier point. As a result it
is far more extravagant in disk space. Read the FAQ on SR at

was infected by a virus.

I would say yes, I use and trust, it but I am not sure if it is really
better than System Restore; I've just always used it so I disabled
"System restore"
