My nephew is spending the weekend with me. He downloaded some software from
the internet and now when Windows reboots all the words show up as symbols.
Same with all the programs listed in my start menu. I tried doing a systems
restore several times but it always shows me that is can not complete the
restore to the date selected and to pic another date. I don't care what point
in time you choose to restore the system it always come up incomplete. I'm
assuming that he has picked up some nasty virus or trojan file that is
causing the problem. I have Symantec Antivirus program Corporate editon. I
have ran a full scan several times also and it it never shows up any
promlems......Is there any hope of fixing this problem or am I screwed?

Hi

Try searching for any spyware you may have on your system with the following
programs:

Spybot - http://www.safer-networking.org/
CWShredder - http://aumha.org/downloads/cwshredder.zip
Spy Sweeper - www.webroot.com
Ad-Aware - www.lavasoftusa.com

Try SpyWareBlaster to stop intrusions:

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Also see the following links:

http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Also run a virus-check on your system with the latest definitions for your
anti virus program.

That error message would suggest that one or more of the System Restore
files have become corrupt. You can try turning SR off/on, although you will
lose all existing checkpoints:

Right click on My Computer and select Properties>System Restore. Enable
'Turn off System Restore on all drives' - then reboot your PC. Go back into
SR and disable 'Turn off...' and then reboot again. After the second reboot
you should have one new checkpoint and SR should work properly after that.

Hi,

Try running System Restore from Safe Mode.

1. Restart your computer, and then press F8 during the initial startup
to start your computer in Safe Mode or Safe Mode with a command prompt.
2. Log on to your computer with an administrator account or with an
account that has administrator credentials.
3. In Safe Mode type or paste the following command in the Start - Run
box then press Enter. In Safe Mode Command Prompt type the following command
then press ENTER.

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
