System Restore

I recently re-installed MS Windows w/ SP2 after developing a problem w/ a WMI
file. I was unable to system restore from a previous date (don't know why). I
got thru this mess, but lost a lot of pictures in the process. However, I had
a system back-up from 2004 on a 2nd hard drive that contained old photos. I
restored the photos to an alternate location successfully - however, I am
unable to open them because access is denied - even though I am the
Administrator and was on the previous Windows install as well. Now I cannot
delete the restored files becasuse they "are in use or write protected".
Additionally, I am unable to open Administrator folders on the new windows.

While you may be AN Adminstrator, there is a difference between an Administrator level user and THE Administrator account.

See Help and Support and search for "take ownership"

HOW TO: Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=308421

Note: For XP Home (you don't specify) you need to boot into Safe Mode to access the builtin Administrator account, and to access the Security tab to take ownership.

For XP Pro press CTRL-ALT-DEL twice at the welcome screen and you'll get the older style logon. Enter Administrator and the password, if any, that you specified for that account when you setup Windows.
