Hello

I use xp sp2 home edition.

Supposing I deleted a 2Gb folder today from c:\ drive or any other partition
and I had also emptied the recycle bin.

I then go into System Restore and select a System
checkpoint of two days ago. Will I recover the 2Gb folder that was deleted
today ? Thank you.

If the folder was user created then no - system restore does not monitor or
restore data - only system files.

Thank you Gordon for your reply.

Yes the folder was user created. I created it. So how can I ensure that I
am able to retrieve user created data which accidentally have been deleted
even from the recycle bin ? Are there any settings in System Restore or any
third party software allowing me to do so ? Thank you.

As I said - system restore does just that - it does not and will not restore
user data.
The procedure giving you the best chance of recovery is to not use the
machine AT ALL (but keep it switched on) after having discovered that you
have accidentally emptied a needed file or folder from the Recycle bin.
You then need an "undelete" tool. Have a look here:

The best way to do this is to have a good data backup procedure, and
to ensure that it is done regularly.

Exactly what this backup procedure should consist of will vary,
depending on how much data you need to have backed up and how much of
that data changes on a regular basis.

Your backup procedures should provide for multiple generations of
backup data. Some people operate with just a single backup copy, and
they create a new one every day. Then they find they need to recover
something from 3 days ago......

Have regular and complete backups. There are a variety of options
including a disk imaging program.

Hello All and thank you for your replies.

What views and comments does one have about Nero Backitup2 v 2.0.0.0 ? I
have installed it but not yet backed up the entire drive ( my preferred
choice ) since I do not have a media like porable usb or firewire hard disk.

To have it backed up on a dvd would require more than a dozen and not
feasible. Thank you.

You're welcome. I can't comment that program - haven't used it.

System restore does NOT revover files that you have deleted.

Nero Backup is fine for backing up user data, such as the "My
Documents" folder. If you want to back up the entire hard drive
then you need a backup medium that has the capacity to make that large
of a backup, such as a removable hard drive.
