What it will do is delete all existing restore points, then start over
creating them again. Norton wants you to do that because it's likely that
the virus exists in one or more of those existing restore points. Although a
virus in a restore point is completely innocuous and can't hurt you unless
you restore from that restore point, Norton wnts to protect you against the
possibility of your doing that.

It's telling you that because the virus is hiding in one of your restore
points. By disabling the system restore and rebooting, you are flushing
out all the old stuff store there, including the viruses.

In addition to Norton, it would be wise to download STINGER from
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ and run it in Safe Mode with Networking.
After that's done, still in Safe Mode, go to
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm and do the online
scan. You must use Internet Explorer for Panda.

You should also run Spybot Search and Destroy as well as AdAware which
can be downloaded from http://www.safer-networking.org/ and
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ respectively. You need to download, install
and update them in Normal Mode but run them in Safe Mode.

Once done, run Norton, Spybot, Adaware and Panda again in Normal Mode.

If Norton, Panda or Stinger report a virus, WRITE THE NAMES AND PATHS OF
THE VIRUSES DOWN. When you're finished, do a search on your computer and
see if they came back or not. If some come back, open cmd, rename the
..exe to .old and put them in Norton's Virus Vault or Quarantine and
reboot. If no problems, eliminate them from there.

Oh, when you're done with all the above, reenable System Restore and
create a new Restore Point.

Hi,

It is not necessary to turn off System Restore during virus removal. If
something goes wrong in the virus/malware removal process you will have
no way to reverse your actions. Sometimes the removal process can be
more damaging to the system than the infection. Two examples would be if
the system became unbootable, or if the ability to connect to the
internet to retrieve additional cleaning utilities is lost. So it is a
good practice to leave System Restore intact until the cleaning process
is over. Just don't forget to purge all existing restore points after
the cleaning is complete.

Once SR is disabled, and upon enabling, a new restore point is
automatically created.

Yes. New points will be created as designed.
