System Restore XP Home

Mark

I tried several times to get System Restore in Windows XP
Home to return me to various system checkpoints. I keep
getting the message :"Restoration Unsuccessful".

I created a check point today and tried to restore to
that point and it worked but any date before that (which
is what I really want) does not work. I checked restore
services and all are on and operating normally.

Any ideas on how to get System restore to function as it
should?

Could a spyware program prevent normal function? I ran a
spyware program and cleaned up my system but still no
luck with restore.

Thanks!

Mark

Restore is not reliable. It's a marketing gimmick for MS.
You can turn it off from Control Panel > System > and
then
re-boot and it will purge it's file. Then re-boot, turn
it
back on.
You still have to deal the problem, it's a crap program,
that half works, half the time.

Do a real backup and get Erunt for your registry. It puts
a folder on your root dir with a installer.

System Restore In MS's own words .......lol

System Restore will sometimes break and the reasons for that are not clear. Unfortunately, the only way to fix that problem is to disable System Restore, reboot the computer, then re-enable System Restore. All you existing Restore Points are lost in the process. That sucks when one is at the point you are at, but is the only solution to get SR working again for future use.

Two points in addition. Having disabled it and rebooted, have Folder
Options - View set to show Hidden files, and *not* Hide Protected mode
ones and make sure that you empty the System Volume INformation on each
disk.

A lot of troubles with it appear to me to arise either from tangled
files in those folders, or having it simply given more space to play
with than is good for it. The default is 12% of a drive, which is not
sensible on modern large drives. When restarting, at System - System
Restore, highlight each drive and take settings - reduce the space
allowed to something under 1GB, I suggest (I use 500 MB and on C: only)
