SYSTEM RESTORE WON'T FUNCTION

P

PAB

I am using Windows XP Family Edition, with all the updates installed
and simply cannot get System Restore to work: whenever I try to
restore to an earlier point, whether one automatically or manually
created, I get the error message that the restoration could not take
place and no changes have been made etc etc.
I tried right-clicking on 'My Computer' - 'Properties' and disabling
System Restore, rebooting and then re-enabling it (advice I found when
I Googled the problem), but this has no effect.
I would be grateful for any suggestions. Please let me know if more
information about my system is required.
Many thanks
Paul Bowden

Thanks for such a prompt reply. Tried all the suggestions in the links
you gave, but it still doesn't work (and none of the situations in the
second link apply to me either!)
Thanks anyway.

Hi Paul,
Could you tell us why you are Restoring your system?, any sign of Infection
lately?.
By the looks of it the Restore point you are trying to restore from are
Corrupt or whatever is blocking the restore procedure making it unsuccessful!.

Did you tried In Safe Mode?, what protection software you have on your
System, please state all including Anti-spyware/pop-up blocker..etc.
HTH.

Hi nass and thank you for taking the time to try to help.
To be honest, it's just curiosity which makes me want to see if SR
works. I did have a major problem a couple of weeks ago and it didn't
work then, so just wanted to see now, when there's no immediate need
for it: thought it would be good to have it ready and waiting, just
in case!
I have not tried it in Safe Mode (but will do.)
My protection software is Kaspersky (KIS 7) and Superantispyware.
Thanks again and very best wishes

Hi Paul,
Try in safe mode and make sure the service Started, to do that follow these
steps:
Open a run command and type in:
services.msc click [OK]
On the Services Control panel locate the System Restore Service and make
sure it started Automatically.

If you are running the SupperAntispyware in Real protection Mode , it will
block you from restoring, so check the References for that option, also it
does provide a Restore/Repair , one of them the System Restore!.
The same with Kaspersky.

Hello:

I had a similar problem, researched the MS KB and Googled for info, but
found nothing that fixed the problem. Then I came upon a shareware utility,
WinRescueXP at: http://regvac.com/frescuex.htm (I have no connection with
this company). I downloaded the fully functioning shareware trial software,
and it was able to restore to any system check point created by the Win XP
System Restore utility. Not only did this fix my immediate problem of
rolling-back a problem driver that I had installed, but the System Restore
utility also began to function properly again. So you might want to give
this utility a try. (It also performs several other functions.)

HTH,
O.J.
