System Restore unable to disable

K

Kurt

I need to disable the system restore feature.

When I try to disable the system restore feature in
Windows XP Pro, I get the following error:

System Restore encountered an error trying to
enable/disable one or more drives. Please restart your
machine and try again.

It does no good to restart, even in safe mode.

I am trying to disable restore because I keep getting a
virus detected mesage for W32/Netsky.p@MM!zip. The tech
at McAfee told me to turn off restore, and run a program
from him called "Stinger".

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Kurt,

Download stinger: http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

Then restart the system in Safe mode by hitting F8 at boot and selecting it
from the menu. Logon as administrator. Start/run services.msc, locate the
System Restore service in the list and "stop" it.

Run stinger that you previously downloaded. Locate the "System Volume
Information" folder on each drive on the system and delete it (or at least
empty the contents of it). Restart normally.

Rerun services.msc and restart the System Restore service.
