System Restore enable/disable error

I had to have my hard drive reformatted and Win XP reinstalled. Running IE6
with SP2. My problem is that I went to create a system restore point and got
the following error. "System Restore encountered an error trying to
enable/disable one or more drives. Please restart machine and start again."
I also have an external drive for user files, etc for backups. The Event log
has no listing for srservice. I have taken the external drive offline and
retry to enable SR and keep getting the same error. Any input to resolve
this problem will be helpful.

Thanks - Russ

How do you (re)install System Restore?

Hi Bert

Thanks for the quick reply and the information. I tried it but ran into a
problem. My PC repair man doesn't have the SR software on the Wins XP CD he
left for me. I had called him about my problem and he said that he turns off
SR & doesn't use it. I told him that might be good for him but I want it
turned on my PC. Anyway I emailed him & told him that he better get his (you
know what) to my place with the correct XP CD to get this done. I'll let you
know the final outcome, but really thank you & others for all your help.

Thanks Again

What exactly was the problem?

Do you have a retail version or an OEM version of XP?
I had called him about my problem and he said that he turns off
SR & doesn't use it.

I would suggest replacing this repair man with a competent computer technician.

In the link I provided there's instructions on how to reinstall System
Restore with the SP2 CD or downloaded files.
Thanks Again
Russ

Bert & Users

My PC Repairman just called me this morning (9:00am CDT) and had a fix for
my problem. We did it over the phone and here are the steps to correct the
error I had. It worked for me so I hope it will work for someone else with
the same problem.

1. Find your "i386" folder. Double click to open folder and scroll down to
find file "SR.IN_".

2. Right click on file and then select "Extract Here"

3. Then scroll down to the the very bottom, a new file called "SR.INF"
should have now been created.

4. Right click on file and then select "Install". When you click on Install
it will open a window.

5. In my case my operating system is drive "C". It will list the file from
where it wants to do the install. "C:\i386\i386\". REMOVE the second i386.
Then hit enter, it will now install System Restore. It takes a second to
install and will then ask you to restart Windows.

This is all that I had to do and my problem was corrected. So I guess I'll
have to keep my repairman. But once again I do thank you all for your help.
