Can't turn System Restore off

Hi,
My computer has been infected with some trojans which have been detected by
my Anti-Virus software. I need to turn off my system restore, but when I
right click on My Computer, go to Properties, click the System Restore tab
and select Turn off Sytem Restore, I get a message saying:
"System Restore encountered an error trying to enable/disable one or more
drives. Please restart your machine and try again."
Can someone please tell me if there is another way to turn system restore
off. My AV keeps deleting the trojans but they keep reappearing again.
Thanks, Kevin

Try turning it off in the safe mode.
Restart the computer. After the Power On Self Test (POST), press and hold the F8 key.

I tried that but it won't allow me to start in safe mode that way. When I hit
F8 I get the screen where you can select Safe Mode, but when I do it reboots
the computer and brings back to that screen. I never get past the screen
where you select safe mode.

Try this way.

1. Click Start, click Run, and then type compmgmt.msc in the Open box.
2. Expand Services & Applications > Services > System Restore Services,
click on Stop.

Thanks jmatt, I followed your instructions however there is no System Restore
Services there. I know there should be as a friend of mine had already taken
me to this area via a different root to click 'stop the service', but it's
not there. Would anyone know of another way to turn off system restore?

Maybe you have XP Home.

Try, Control Panel > System > System Restore, tick > Turn off system
restore on all drives.

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore.
If a "DisableSR" value doesn't exist, go to the Edit menu, select New,
DWORD value, and create the value.
Set the value to 1 to disable System Restore or 0 to enable System
Restore.

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\sr to
prevent the System Restore service from starting.

Double-click Start, and set the value to 4 to stop the service from
starting or to 0 for normal startup. Close the registry editor.
