System restore suddenly fails

Have an HP laptop and until recently system restore worked fine but now get
this message after restart and am at a loss--???
"System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files

and settings were not changed.

Details:
An unspecified error occurred during System Restore.

You might try System Restore again and choose a different restore point."

I run Kaspersky internet security suite(perviously had AVG)- not sure
whether significant- I disable this but get same message.

I also run adaware free version-

Incidentally I discovered i had this problem with system restore when I was
struggling to reinstall adobe shockwave player-

Any thoughts on my problem with system restore appreciated-

Thanks for this-I am interested why system restore operates only in safe
mode, but originally worked OK
