System restore stopped & will not start

The System Restore Tab in the System Properties dialoge box has disapeared,
so I can't start it that way. I tried starting it via Computer Management
but I get an error message stating "Error 5 access denied". Maybe that's a
permission issue, but I'm using an admin account. I tried booting in safe
mode and using the other admin account but that didn't work either.

So how do I start system restore? And how do I get the system restore tab
back in system properties?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks Gerry. I did the reinstall of System Restore but it still didn't work.
I got suspicious that maybe it was ZoneAlarm interfereing with it, but after
checking it wasn't that.

I'm curious about the dependancy of system restore on Remote Procedure Call
as per computer management. How do I verify if the dependancy is working
properly?

Any other ideas? It is strange as I keep getting a "Error 5 access denied"
message when I try to start system restore.

Thanks again!

(If I worked in IT, I'd sure get fired).

No Norton prodocuts installed. Ausus p5n32-e plus, core duo 6600, XP Pro
service pack 2 and all other critical updates.

A little history: I had a virus a few weeks ago and I shut off system
restore for a while until that was dealt with and turned on system restore
again. But a few days ago I got blue screens after installing a game. So I
went to system restore to see if that would help and it was stopped. When I
opened system properties the system restore tab was there but it dissapeared
before my very eyes, never to return again.

Thanks for the interest.

Thanks for the input Bert. I followed the instructions at that link to no
avail. There is no reference to system restore in that folder of the
registry(...policies\microsoft\windowsnt\...). The only thing in there is a
folder named terminal services.

When I try to start system restore I still get "Error 5 access denied"

Thanks again,

Surefire.

If your primary problem is System Restore Tab missing, it may be the same
problem I have just solved. It relates to Registry.
However, you'd better see if System Restore is working or not. The methods
you can try is listed here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302796/

In my case, the function started and worked. So, I tried someone's
suggestion as follows:
1. Click Start, click Run, and then type "regedit" in the Open box, and then
press Enter.
2. Locate the following:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore.
3. Look for a "DisableSR" in the right window. If a "DisableSR" value
doesn't exist, go to the Edit menu, select New, DWORD value, and create the
value.
Set the value to 0 to enable System Restore (the value 1 to disable System
REstore).
4. Then close Regedit and restart PC.

In my case, the Tab is back.
