System Restore Service - Access Denied

OK, something happened with System Restore Service on my system.

WinXP Pro SP2
all updates installed.

Some how the System Restore Service does not start even though it _is_
set to Automatic (Service Management).

Of course, the System Restore Wizard does not work and there is no
[Restore] tab in My computer, Properties.

When I try to manually start it, I get an "Could not start on this
computer, access denied" error after the start progress-bar ends.

Note there is only one account on my system (from original install)
and I have Administrative level. I have no problem stating/stopping
any other service.

I even reinstalled System Restore as suggested by:
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/reinstall.html

Reinstall ran OK. Rebooted, but still cannot start the System Restore
Service.

Any ideas?

Have you tried to open System Restore in Safe Mode?

At the bottom of the page you quoted is a list of files required for a
reinstall. Did you check if all those are in place?

If you have Norton antivirus, you may try uninstalling it, as it is known
to interfere with System Restore reinstall (as with so many other things).

Finally, I can point you to this forum for System Restore:

can't help you, then who can?

Thanks for the reply, but I found the problem on my own.

The security settings for my "C:\System Volume Information" folder was
missing "System" and I don't know why. All my other drives had both
"System" & "Administrators" (list/read).

By the way, some background:

I found this problem because ever so often I flush my System Restores
by disabling Restore (which deletes all Restore Points), rebooting,
then re-enabling Restore and rebooting.

I discovered this problem when I tried to disable Restore for a flush.
There was no [Restore] tab in "My Computer" Properties.

I still cannot think of anything I did that would remove "System" from
my "C:\System Volume Information" security settings. Guess I just
have to keep a closer eye on my system from now on.

Hi,

If reinstalling did not fix it, I would start leaning towards infection.
Here's a good place to start.

You could also look in Event Viewer for any "sr" and "srservice" logs that
may exist.

Again, I suspect malware/virus infection is the cause.
