System Restore problem

When I launch "System Restore," I get an application window, but it
contains nothing and it just sits. (I have an Averatec av3715-eh1.)
The System Restore is set to "On."

The background is that I have been having "Generic Host Process for
Win32 services encountered a problem" messages pop up. When I run
McAfee Virus checker, it goes for a while, but gets frozen halfway
through. I checked the Services tab, and I see several automatic
services are not running, including the System Restore, and I started
that service, but that doesn't make a difference -- the System Restore
window is still empty.

I'm kind of in a catch 22 -- I would be simply happy to go back to the
situation several days ago, but with System Restore not functioning, I
don't know what to do. Any deas what the problem might be? Thanks for
any help.
