I just noticed that I cannot go back before 1 Nov. When I click on the left
arrow to go back to October nothing happens. I didn't do anything to cause
this. Can someone please explain why this is happening? Thanks.

Hi,

As you probably know, the number of restore points can be limited by
the amount of disk space you assign to System Restore. How many restore
points do you have in November?

One issue I've noticed is with Windows Defender which I've seen make as
many as five restore points in one day, thus eating up the allotted
System Restore drive space in short order. This insane behaviour can be
disabled if one wants.

I have the max assigned disk space (2343 MB). So I don't see how I could
have exceeded this amount in only 2 weeks. I have 34 check points in
November. How do I restrict the number of check points? What do you think is
keeping me from going back to October?

Each checkpoint stores ALL of the info required to reset to that date.. 34
checkpoints is a lot of info..

I'm not sure what the problem is, but let me point out that going back to
November is *not* a good idea. System Restore a tool that can be very useful
for reverting the operating system to the condition it was in yesterday, or
at most a few days ago. Its purpose is to let you undo an installation or
choice you made *recently*.

It is *not* meant to be a complete backup solution. If you try to use it to
go back several weeks or months ago, you will almost certainly create all
kind of out-of-synch conditions, and make the situation *worse*, not better.
That's not System Restore's purpose and you should not think of it in those
terms. A week or two is about the longest time you can effectively go back.

For that reason, the default 12% of the drive that Windows uses for SR is
way too much for almost everyone, and should be lowered to give you at most
two weeks.

If you want to stop Windows Defender from creating Restore Points ...

Go to Start => Run and type in "regedit" {without the quotes}

Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Scan

Right-click this key folder key, and click on 'Permissions'
Select your username (highlighted), click 'Full Control' in the 'Allow'
column, and click 'Apply'

With the the above key highlighted,
Go to Edit => New => DWORD value, and type in "DisableRestorePoint"
{without the quotes} in the box, and hit Enter.

Double-click on DisableRestorePoint in the right-hand pane, and set the
Value to 1 (hexadecimal)

Now, undo the Permissions you set earlier:
Right-click the 'Scan' key in the left-hand pane, and choose
'Permissions'
With your username selected (highlighted), uncheck 'Full Control' in
the 'Allow' column, and click 'Apply'

Close the registry editor.
