Problem With System Restore

Nobody has been able to figure this one out. Awhile back I downloaded a
driver for a Zio card reader. It really messed up my computer. I had to go
back to a restore point. For awhile I didn't notice anything until I ran out
of disk space. I finally found through sequoia view that over 90GB were used
up by system restore. Now I can't use it. I go through my computer and click
on the system restore tab and what I get is: "Run a DLL as an app has
encountered a problem and needs to close". I have had to shut down system
restore through the registry. I tried to fix system restore through the
registry. It will not work. I still have 6GB of disk space as system restore
points along with other stuff. I cannot determine which is which. What got me
was I still don't know what program made a restore point every 3 minutes for
3 months. I have been to so called experts and downloaded registry cleaners,
registry fixers and registry fix specifically for system restore, nothing. I
have tried to go through administrator in safe mode, nothing. I have sent
several reports to micorsoft from that error pop up. So now, I try here. Does
anyone here have any idea that might help?

Yes Zone Alarm is installed. The free version. We tried that step too. I shut
down zone alarm completely and tried to work on system restore to no avail. I
will check out the link you posted and see if that will work. The last one I
tried to do required me to get into system restore to do it and that was not
possible. I hope it works.

I tried to run that from the command prompt. It found the file in
ServicePackFiles but then came back and said I need "srframe.mmf". I tried to
go to microsoft to find that file and it found 1 for Windows ME. I have all
updated files on XP2. I went to micorsoft and had my computer checked to make
sure. I don't know where that file is. I don't have the CD.

If I would have just scrolled down a little further I would have seen where
that file was. I went through the process again and this time it worked. It
seems to be working fine right now. I was actually able to go to the system
restore tab and click on it and system restore showed. I had been to several
sites asking for help and nobody knew what to do. I want to thank you Bert
Kinney.

You know, I went to Zone Alarm and registered in their forums and asked if
this was a problem with their software and nobody told me anything. Now that
I seen your article it all makes sense. I am going to try and uninstall ZA
now. It looks like it might be quite time consuming.
The AT&T guy come out to my house to fix my modem and he said something that
I agree with completely. "You should not have to be a Microsoft certified
tech to just run your computer". Now I understand those Microsoft guy and Mac
guy commercials. I spend so much time and money trying to fix things I really
don't get to do what I got the computer for in the first place.
I want to thank you again for your help.

It's definitely worth doing to rule it out.

I agree! If in doubt, these newsgroups are a good place to ask before
proceeding.

By the way, is the system connected to a DSL or cable modem?
I want to thank you again for your help.

You're very welcome.

I have a DSL connection. I haven't really had a problem with spyware or
viruses. I have so much protection on here I don't see how anything could get
in. I run checks all the time. I have a tool called Unistall Tool. I used it
to remove Zone Alarm. I noticed the first thing it did was remove all the
stuff that article said I would have to do manually. It took it completely
off of my system. I downloaded Computer Associates Firewall. I don't know yet
about it. It has caused my computer to restart 3 times so far since I
installed it. I will give it a chance but if it doesn't work I will go
elsewhere. I have been using Bleeping Computer a lot. I went back to sequoia
view and ran it again and found I have gained back my 7GB of hard drive
space. I am not a microsoft certified tech but I am becoming one just trying
to keep my system running. Thanks for your support. I really do appreciate it.

Sounds like a nice utility!

The reason I ask about DSL/Cable, is that a router is a better choice than a
software firewall. Having Windows XP SP2 and all updates, along with a
good antivirus application behind a router should be all you need. That's my
experience without bogging the system down.
I have been using Bleeping Computer a lot.

This is a good source of information.

Let me understand this. Are you saying that with the DSL Modem I don't need
the firewall or is a router different than the DSL modem? I would really like
to do without a firewall. The ambiguous pop up's are a pain. Every time I do
anything I have to stop and deny or allow and I don't even know what I am
allowing. I didn't get all that with just the Windows Firewall. I have
learned a lot but there is so much more to learn.

The router will act as a hard firewall. And along with the built-in firewall
in Windows XP SP2, that's all you should need.

Here's a diagram of how it should look.

The router and the XP firewall should stop them all. They have for me using
DSL or Cable.

It's never ending. :)

Thanks Bert. I had to uninstall CA Firewall bucause it kept restarting my
computer. I haven't had any problem since. I now use Windows Firewall. Thanks
again.
