System Restore Points

Apparently, Microsoft has corrected the problem of System Restore points
being generated after a scan. However, WD checkpoints continue to be created
after (1) a PC has been warm booted and (2) after the PC has been shut down
and rebooted. Is this supposed to occur or is this just another bug?

I can confirm that spurious restore points are created at the reboot of a
shut down computer. I am not so sure about the warm reboots to which you
refer. This morning Defender generated three more system restore points
after my morning start and I am unable to associate them with any specific
events.
I do hope that MS people can get to grips with this problem before the more
widespread roll out of Defender to more users that is imminent.

Hello CE and Hawkins,

Maybe you want to confirm the following:

After some maintenance in my PC, Delete cookies, Temp, and TIFs, check my
services, etc, etc, I run http://safety.live.com/site/en-US/default.htm
Using Clean up, also Tune Up..
Rebot to safe mode and run CCleaner.
Rebot and run sfc /scannow.
I notice no more restore points in my PC, I rebot 2 o 3 times and no more RP.
I think, sfc /scannow is the one what fix the problem with the RPs.

Try it, and post your results.

Thank you

The surest and safest way to stop spurious restore points being created by
Defender is to uninstall it. The alternative is to wait and put up with the
annoyance until it is fixed by the developers. I had taken the first option
and had only reinstalled Defender to see if it had been fixed. It has not.

http://safety.live.com/site/en-US/default.htm Is still in its Beta stage. I
have run it previously and it made some unwanted registry changes that I did
not spot at the time. I had to do a repair install of Home Publishing and a
Start Up manager. So I would not recommend this process to the unwary.

Running sfc/scannow, using a CD that has been slipstreamed with SP 2, does
not fix the Defender restore points for me.

Richard.

All,

As always, you should make sure that you have got a working system
restore point before you run sfc /scannow. This did not take care of the
sleazy restore points. However, it did manage to secrew up the ATI display
settings on my test machine running under XP Pro with SP 2, and I
had to carry out a system restore.

I do not know what Engel was smoking when he or she suggested
running sfc /scannow. However, he or she should be aware that
the sleazy restore points have been introduced as a "feature" (bug?)
with version 1.1.1347.0. As such, it is very unlikely that sfc /scannow
will take car of those sleazy restore points.

As always, you should make sure that you have got a working system
restore point before you run sfc /scannow since some of your system
files may be overwritten.

"Surest and safest way..." etc. I wish!

I've never had a problem with SR before, many times it has got me out of
trouble, but recently I installed Windows Defender (on advice from a friend),
WD was such a nagging nuisance that I uninstalled it tout de suite. Even
post-uninstalling WD I've noticed probs when in IExplorer so have tried to SR
to a date before I got WD, but it won't allow me to go back before that
wretched date.

Have you ever found this, or got a tip for me?
TIA

I have not even installed the Windows Defender yet--am still using the
Microsoft AntiSpyware Bata Version One and it works really good and appears
to get along with my AdAware and Trend Micro AntiSpyware programs---after
seeing the problems that being caused by the Defender program--I am not sure
if I should even use it at all. What do you guys think?
