System Restore Points Vanished

D

Dave

Recently, I noticed there were no SR points available at all. I created
one just to see if it still worked, and it did. Several days later there
were several available.
Apparently, some kind of action had removed all my SR points. I do have SR
turned on, with the recommended amount of mem allocated. In the past, I
have noted up to 2 weeks worth of points.

What kind of action would have erased them all?

Thx
Dave

There are some malware programs which you can download that will reset SR so
that you cannot delete them by doing a restore. Have you downloaded anything
recently?

Good question -
Don't think so, but I have done a considerable amount of misc file
maintenance lately.

Huuuummmmmmmmmmmm - I better take a closer look.

Thx - appreciate the good suggestion

The normal ways to remove restore points are Disk CleanUp leaving you
with a single restore point or to turn off System Restore. To manually
delete restore points you would need to gain access to the System Volume
Information folder, which by deffault is not allowed. To be able to gain
access to need to carry out a certain procedure. Can you see the
contents of the System Volume Information folder? If yes you have turned
off the protection.

Thanks Gerry - that was it.
I did do a Disk Cleanup recently (for the first and last time.)
Anyway, I'm back in business. Thx for the clarification

Bad mistake. Disk cleanup does NOT remove restore points unless you elect to
do so by clicking more options tab and then selecting the option. Your
system will gradually slow if you fail to do Disc Cleanup periodically.

What? Unless you intentionally go the the More Optios tab and use the Clean
button there, to delete Restore Points, it's NOT going to. It's not even
an option in the default window.
Please don't post misinformation: Before you post, try out what you're
about to say first so you don't screw it up.

Manually deleting System Restore Points is silly anyway. Perish the thought
and protect yourself from screwups. It's almost never necessary to do what
you suggest here. Much better to simply turn off and then back on Restore
Points.

My normal full paragraph if suggesting removal using Disk CleanUp.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also
select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System
Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

You will have no doubt read read this in many of my posts!

Who was suggesting manual deletion from the System Volume Folder? I
merely stated how it might be done!

You have ignored the context in which my earlier post was written;
namely it was about how restore points might vanish not about how to
remove them. You conveniently choose to ignore this part of the post:
"You may find an explanation in this link:
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/missingrps.html "

You phrase your comments in your usual rude, abrasive manner. Instead of
trying always to knock the efforts of others you might make a bigger
effort to be helpful.
