System restore points that disappear

The last few months there have been several posts here regarding system
restore points that disappear. None of the potential solutions listed have
helped at all. Is there any new information about how to fix this problem
with XP? My system cannot hold restore points for more than a week before
automatically deleting them. This is a significant issue. Why hasn't
Microsoft addressed it more vigorously? Anyone?

That's a feature of XP. Dont like it? Dont use it.

It isn't a feature of XP to just get rid of RPs capriciously
unless something is wrong.

One thing the OP didn't mention was how much of his HD they were
allocating to RPs. Suppose it is only 1-2%. That could well mean
that after only 5-7 System Checkpoints, there's not enough room
so XP starts deleting, oldest first. That may look to the OP as
if XP is being arbitrary but may be what they said to do.

After lurking and asking questions over time, I adjust the HD
space in the 5-7% range for normal usage, which is easily enough
to keep 3-4 weeks of RPs around. Past a week or two, though,
you'll do more damage than good rolling back. On the otherhand,
if I'm doing a lot of system work, e.g., installs/uninstalls,
testing, tweaking systems settings, I'll up RP to 9-11% so as to
avoid the many manually created RPs causing older, stable RPs to
get FIFO.

In answer to both Kelly and Mopar:

Yes, I clean my hard disk regularly. I have 185GB free on my hard drive and
have the full 12% of my hard drive set aside for System Restore. The odd
thing is I did not have this problem the first year I had the computer with
XP installed. Then, two months ago, a bad install of Iomegaware messed up my
IRQ settings and forced me to format the drive and reinstall XP. Ever since
I got my system back up and running this restore problem occurred. Again,
I've tried all the suggestions previously posted, such as visiting
(http://bertk.mvps.org/) and other associated sites, all to no avail.

Well, don't think you've suddenly gone senile. <grin> I /have/
seen this myself. I had well over a month's RPs on my system,
then one day, none at all. Checked System Restore settings,
still at the same percentage. They just disappeared. But, I
think in all my SP1 and now SP2 years, that has only happened
a couple of times. It may well have been a side-effect of
something I'd done somewhere else, but I don't recall.

But, as I think I recommended earlier, once you think you've
got your system stable, turn RP off, make sure the Sys Vol
Info folder is empty (it should be), immediately turn RP back
on, and set one manually. I use a name like "System OK, after
cleaning up old RPs" so I know /I/ did it. Saves my sanity.
<grin>

Good luck tracking down the root cause of your problem.
