System restore not working

This is new to me so be patient!
When trying to use system restore on Vista Home Basic I receive the same
"unspecified error" message as other people on this site. Please can someone
tell me how to resolve the problem . . in an IDIOTS GUIDE version please.

Restart your computer while continuously tapping the F8 key. This will bring
you into Safe Mode. Run System Restore from there, then restart your
computer normally.
