System Restore is monitoring wrong disks/partitions

Windows XP home SP2

After replacing my old 20G system disk with an 80G disk I reformatted the 20G
disk and am using it for backups. I cloned the system to the new disk using
Acronis.

Old disk partitions are W: and X:
New disk partitions are C: and D:

System restore seems to think that W: is still the system disk, Choosing
"system restore settings" lists W: D: and X: only, in that order. W: is
treated as the system disk and C: is just not there.

If I boot with the old 20G disk (W: X:) switched off everything is fine with
C: being monitored

I'm kinda guessing that there is a registry or config file issue somewhere
but I just don't know where and I won't risk editing the registry without
advice

Thanks

Yes - The C: drive which is my system drive is missing from the list.

As I said -
"system restore settings" lists W: D: and X: only, in that order. W: is
treated as the system disk and C: is just not there.

It's not so bad now because i tested a restore and it seems that C: is
actually being monitored even though it is not in the list

Hi bert

I tried this now but it didn't fix the problem I'm afraid. Only the C:
(system) drive had a drivetable.txt which looked OK to me - it had all the
right drives listed in the right order. I renamed it anyway and rebooted but
there was no change and the file was re-made as it was before.

I also tried renaming "system volume information" on partition W: which
System restore sees as the system disk. This just got re-made on reboot.

I think it may be to do with my old drive (W: and X: partitions) looking
like a system disk. In disk management W: is marked as active and I don't
know how to change this. The "active" option is greyed out after a
right-click. It is not the real system disk as the system boots OK with this
disk powered off and the System restore list is then OK with C: and D:

Perhaps I need to boot from the install CD and try to fix the partitions?
I don't feel too safe doing this though. I do have backups but restores are
not usually trouble-free.

Thanks again for the advice.

OK - I saw that, sorry I didn't mention it. I'll try that soon and let you
know.
