System restore illegal operation

Good day

OS - WinXP Home SP2

We recently fitted a new hard drive and transferred the system to the bigger
drive using a Western Digital utility. The system is running fine, with the
exception of system restore. When we click on system restore either via the
control panel or through the start menu, it immediately reports an error
(send/don't send).

Would anyone have a suggestion as to how to fix this please?

Many thanks,
Michael

Hi

One or more of the System Restore files could have been corrupted - try
turning SR off/on - but I'm afraid that you will lose any existing
checkpoints:

Right click My Computer, select Properties and then the System Restore tab.
Enable 'Turn off System Restore on all drives' and reboot your PC. After
that 1st reboot go back into SR and disable 'Turn off System Restore on all
drives' and reboot your PC again. After that 2nd reboot you should have one
new SR checkpoint.

Hi Will, thanks for the prompt reply.

Tried that, selecting the tab causes a further error message refering to API
functions etc. DrWatson then reports it's crashed.

I'm not concerned about the previous restore points being lost, the system
has been totally error free so if I can fix this, I'll create a manual one.

Hi Michael

Try and reinstall System Restore. Open Windows Explorer and go to the
windows\inf folder. Find the sr.inf file, right click on it and select
Install.

Stupid of me I know. But when I go to Windows Explorer, My document folder
opens in my xp. How do I go to windows\inf folder and find the sr.inf file.
TIA.

Apologies JCD, I stopped following this thread and didn't notice your question.

The "inf" folder is hidden, so you'll need to show hidden files and folders
to find it. Launch explorer, then click Tools -> Folder Options -> View tab,
and scroll down until you find the radio button called "Show hidden files and
folders". Click it, acknowledge the warning, click on Apply and get yourself
back to Explorer and you'll now find the Windows/inf folder is visible.
