In another thread I asked whether the latest update to Windows XP Home
Edition with SP2 might have caused my Echo sound card and Linksys wireless
card to fail to work properly.
Assuming that the update was the cause of the problem, I tried a system
restore last night. After the system restore the computer re-booted to a
screen showing only my chosen background image - no icons and no task bar at
the bottom of the screen - meaning that I could no longer access any
application. The HDD LED showed a lot of activity for a few minutes then
slowed down such that it lit up briefly every couple of seconds or so.
I then loaded my Windows XP installation CD-ROM and attempted to repair the
installation. After some 40 minutes of repair/re-installation, the computer
re-booted to the same background image with no icons and no task bar. Again,
lots of HDD activity for a few minutes after which it just ticked over. The
computer is unusable and I'm sending this from my office computer.
Can anyone suggest any remedy, must I now do a complete and fresh
re-install? Should I re-format the drive to be sure that the fresh install
is successful? I have no data on the C: drive, but lots of applications, a
number of which I purchased online and do not have installation CDs for, so
re-formatting this drive would be problematical.
